A reader of my report ‘The Role and Future of Citizen Committees in Australian Local Government‘ says: ‘It’s given me ideas already … like upping the profile of our committees on the council website. The case study material is really practical.’

This is thanks to case study councils Wyndham City Council, Surf Coast Shire Council and Nillumbik Shire Council.

Success factors for citizen committees

I found in this study of citizen committees that committees are most likely to succeed:

  • if their role is well understood in the council’s community engagement framework
  • when a clear committee purpose and terms of reference are in place
  • when recruitment strategy aims for diversity in membership
  • when good liaison processes are given priority
